3.0 Announcements
New Commissioner Joseph Quigg introduced himself to
the Commission. He is a local developer creating wheelchair accessible housing
in Santa Cruz.

Commissioners Reports
Chair Stone reported the following:

Requested that a link to www.voter.org be placed on the
Commission website.
·
Reviewed legislation
see letter.
·
The IHSS commission has endorsed propositions 71 (Stem Cell
Research and 63 (1% tax for mental
health services). He also distributed a brochure on Prop 71.
·
(County, State ?) Health and Human Services staff have been
cut and retraining new intake workers has begun. Quality assurance measures are
still not yet in effect. The plan will be to implement a uniform intake process
within the state.
·
Assemblymember Laird will be attending the next IHSS
committee meeting.
·
CCAH is moving to Watsonville.
·
Chair Stone is signing up for community
television classes.
Commissioner Heylin reported that he went to Berkeley
and Richmond to investigate their methods of enforcing accessible parking. When
they had more staff they used the Unruh Act to more forcefully enforce rights.
They sent letters informing businesses that they could be sued due to
violations of State and Federal law.
Commissioner Quigg suggested working with the County
to streamline the ADA compliance process through the Planning Department.
7.2 Coordinator’s Report

Coordinator worked a table at the Annual Job Fair - disbursing information on the Commission
and voter registration. Also distributed brochures to de-mystify the process to
gaining employment at the County.
·
Michael Bradshaw of CCCIL suggested the Commission consider
initiating a consortium in Santa Cruz of employers who employ persons with
disabilities.
·
Requested Commissioners consider changing meeting time to be
effective in 2005.
· Met a representative from a project called Helping Hand that operates out of Scotts Valley. One day a month a group donates carpentry skills to low income community members to assist with home repairs.

Accessible Parking Enforcement: Chair Stone asked if there is a map of blue zones in the
City of Santa Cruz. Coord. to call city public works to see if there is a
city-wide. still waiting on liability . Commission discussed next step.

Cultural Competency Standards: On hold
until January
Terry Brickley Education Enhancement Scholarship (Cabrillo
College Foundation): The Coordinator reported that she obtained the
award recipients address from the Cabrillo College Foundation and has sent a
congratulatory letter from the Commission.

replacement for his position.
