1.0       Call to Order

Chair Stone called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m.

3.0 Announcements

Chair Stone shared the following quote from Jessica Mitford: “You may not be able to change the world but you can embarrass the guilty.”

 

New Commissioner Chris Lewis introduced herself. She is a parent of a person with a disability (MS). She wants to get more involved and learn more about services for disabled persons. Accessing services for her daughter has been very frustrating and she wants to learn more and see if she can help.

            7.1 Commissioners Reports

Chair Stone reported at length on disability-related legislation including that the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR)launched a new Web site, http://www.disabilityaccessinfo.ca.gov/, to

serve as a one-stop resource for locating information on disability law and access issues.

 

Commissioner Heylin  reported that he is serving on the Elderly and Disabled Transportation Taskforce. He also reported that a courtesy letter to Mission Tile regarding access issues was sent. He asked Commissioners if there were any other non-compliant businesses that could use a courtesy letter.

 

Co-chair Quigg reported that he has gathered more information on what would be needed to update State Building code to meet current technology regarding Special Access Elevators. The Coordinator will follow up with Alison Endert of Assemblymember Laird’s office.

 

 

 

ACTION: The Commission approved pursuing code changes that have prevented the installation of residential elevators.

7.2 Coordinator’s Report

·         Coordinator passed around accessibility information available at the County Planning Department.

·         Coordinator shared an email from Mary James, Executive Director of the Housing Authority in response to alleged proposed cuts to Section 8 and other housing vouchers.

·         Coordinator reported that she informed Reel Work that the Commission would like to participate in next year’s Labor Film Festival.

8.1 Updates

Inclusive Home Design: Commissioner Bush will be reporting on his work with Universal Design. Also see Co-Chair Quigg’s report above on residential elevators.

 

Accessible Parking Enforcement: 

ACTION: The Commission will write letter to board recommending that liability insurance be a priority for parking enforcement.

Legislation: Chair Stone reported that he is monitoring 53 new bills that pertain to disability.

Disability Awareness/Cultural Competency:  Chair Stone reported on his public television show- Kudos and Gotcha. The program will focus on disability and labor issues.

 

Terry Brickley Education Enhancement Scholarship (Cabrillo College Foundation): The Coordinator reported that the next Scholarship Award Ceremony is scheduled for May 20, 2005.

 

8.2Commission vacancy update

There are two vacancies in the Fourth District.
