Commissioners Reports
Chair Stone reported the following:
n
He is participating in a Speaker’s Bureau on Disability
issues.
n
May 22, 2005 is train day and trains will be running
throughout the County.
n
The San Francisco Chronicle’s Business section featured an
article on the impact of the new Medi-Cal that does not allow negotiation with
the pharmaceutical companies resulting in a price increase beyond inflation.
n
A new California State Bill on Assisted Suicide is coming up
and would like to Commission to review it.
n
He has purchased a digital video camera to record a
Disability Show for the local Community Channel. Healthcare for All and the
SEIU are also working on it. They are currently thinking about highlighting ADA
compliant businesses.
Vice Chair Quigg reported that State building code
is behind current technology. There are affordable lifts and elevators that the
building code does not recognize. The implication being that the code could be
an obstacle to affordable options to build and or upgrade facilities to be ADA
compliant.
ACTION: The Commission will send a letter requesting a
meeting with Assemblymember Laird to explore addressing the building code and current
technology.

Commissioner Heylin reported that he would like to
issue Access Courtesy Notices to non-compliant businesses. The Commission has
an appropriate form letter which he will use.
7.2 Coordinator’s Report

The Coordinator participated in the 5310 funding review
process for paratransit services.
n
The Women’s Commission is sponsoring an evening at the Reel
Work Labor Film Festival: Women and Walmart – Local and Global Impact. The
event will be on Saturday, April 30, 2005 at the Cabrillo Extension in
Watsonville from 7-9pm.
n
The Commission discussed sponsoring an evening during next
year’s event on labor and persons with disabilities.
8.0 Ongoing business
8.1 Updates
Inclusive Home Design: See discussion on Building Code
and Technology above.
Accessible Parking Enforcement: Coordinator reported that this program is on hold until the
Sheriff’s Volunteer Program is able to resolve liability insurance issues. They
are actively working on it.
Legislation: Chair Stone reported he is
monitoring 53 new bills that pertain to disability.
Cultural Competency Standards: The
Commission discussed sponsoring an evening during next year’s event on labor
and persons with disabilities.
Terry Brickley Education Enhancement Scholarship (Cabrillo
College Foundation): Universal Design Conference has offered to donate
proceeds to the scholarship.
8.2 Commission vacancy update
Coordinator will call Supervisor Campos’ staff to see if
there is any progress on appointments.
8.3 Movie Theatres: Adaptive
Listening Devices – tabled.
