Vice Chair Bush called the meeting to order at 10:35 am.

3.0 Announcements

Vice Chair Bush announced that there is a new residential building downtown that does not include roll-in showers or compensation for transfer despite that this project received over 1.1 million in public funding. He is exploring how this was overlooked.

ACTION: The Commission approved minutes for the March 2004 meeting.

            7.1 Commissioners Reports

 

Vice Chair Bush reported that he participated in a survey of polling places mandated by the Attorney General. The study was conducted state-wide and revealed that whereas most polling places complied, there were some that did not comply at all. The problem most sited was signage. Unfortunately bathrooms were included in the survey even though the need for them is minimal except for the election workers.

 

Commissioner Sinclair reported that he suggested that elections not use yellow accessible signage.

 

7.2 Coordinator’s Report

%         The June meeting will be at the  Watsonville Community Hospital. The Coordinator will issue PSA’s to local media to inform the community in South County.

%         The upcoming State budget will have an adverse impact on the County’s budget. There may be layoffs and cuts to services coming that will impact persons with disabilities.

8.1 Updates

Inclusive Home Design: No report

Accessible Parking Enforcement: The Coordinator reported that the Volunteer Coordinator for the Sheriff’s department is still researching liability coverage for the volunteer parking enforcement.

Legislation: No Report

Cultural Competency Standards: The Coordinator and Commissioner Sarmiento met to develop a plan to assess the Commission for Cultural Competency. In addition, the Coordinator will be serving on the County’s Cultural Competency Committee to present the principles to various County departments.

 

Terry Brickley Scholarship: Commissioner Ferr reported that he is contacting the Cabrillo College Foundation on a quarterly basis to confirm the status of donation levels.  As of  December 31, 2003 the Terry Brickley Scholarship Fund has received $1350 in donations. Commissioner Ferr requested that the Commission send thank you notices to donors and record their names on the Terry Brickley website. The Commission discussed ways to publicize the scholarship fund.

9.1 Commission vacancy update

Commissioner McGaw suggested that the Coordinator email Caroline at Cabrillo Stroke Center regarding commission vacancies.

 

9.2 Polling Place survey

ACTION: The Coordinator will contact Jonathan Adler to request SC County results to forward to the Board and to the accessible voting committee.
